Description:

The author offers a unique perspective into the possibilities of an energy independent society with her story of the Danish island of Samso. The island produces roughly eight hundred and twenty-six million kilowatt hours per year from wind power, more than enough to meet the needs of the islands 4,500 inhabitants.

Of most widespread interest are the inner-social relations between community members that made the transition possible in only five years with few subsadies, and the push to live a 2,000-watt lifestyle, a vision developed by the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in which individuals in the developed world cut their over-all rate of energy use (not just electrical) to an average of no more than 2,000 watts (17,520 kilowatt-hours per year) by the year 2050, without lowering their standard of living.

The full 2,000-watt lifestyle report, including: feasibility, technical challenges, proposed new technologies, buildings, transportation, electronics, industrial processes, material efficiency, and socio-psychological aspects, can be downloaded here.
